Brodie: Alright—what’s up, everyone! Welcome to Pickleball Cheat Code—the show for competitive players who want to level up their game. I’m Brodie Smith—
Tanner: —and I’m Tanner Tomassi. We’re your hosts, and honestly? We made this show because it’s the podcast we were looking for.
Brodie: Exactly. Look, we love this sport. But if you're a 4.0 to 5.0 or even higher—it can be hard to find advanced content that actually makes you better. There’s a lot of beginner tips out there, but not as much real strategy talk for people who want to win more matches and tournaments.
Tanner: We need to talk about when to speed up, how to recognize patterns, decision making, technique—and how to stop popping up your thirds.
Brodie: Was that a personal shot? Directed at me?
Tanner: [laughs] Listen, I’m trying to help you.
Brodie: Really Tanner… Okay fine.. before we get too deep—should we introduce ourselves a little bit for people who don’t know us yet?
Tanner: Yeah, go for it.
Brodie: I’m a 5.5 level player and a coach. I’m originally from Seattle, so I grew up around pickleball, but I really started getting into it in 2021-2022. I used to work in tech, but I got so deep into the sport that I changed career paths. Now I work at CRBN Pickleball as the senior community manager, and am traveling around the country living the Nomad life and playing pickleball all over the place.
Tanner: I’m a touring pro with a 6.0 DUPR and I recently won a bronze medal at APP Nationals. I create online coaching content daily under the name Tanner Pickleball. I’m a student of the game myself and love helping people understand why certain choices on the court work or don’t work. I’m obsessed with the mental side of the game and how you can build smarter patterns and make better reads. This sport really changed my life; I recently was in India playing professionally and I’ve played against the best players in the world like Ben Johns.
Brodie: Tanner, how quickly you have risen in the pro ranks, has truly been amazing to watch. And this show is really about bringing other people along with us as we try to improve, so they can learn from our wins and losses. This isn’t just us talking down from the mountaintop. We’re still learning, too! We’re testing things, trying to get better, figuring out what works.
